Venus Williams lost to Sofia Kenin 2-6 6-7 in round 1 at US open 2026. The second set seemed competitive if you haven’t watched it yet. The match finished after 2am in the early morning because of the late finish from previous match between Novak Djokovic and Mariano Navone.
I love Venus and am a massive fan of the Williams sister. Venus is always very gracious if you see her interviews. Whether she wins or lose, she is always very kind in her answers. However, Venus is 46 years old. Although it’s extraordinarily inspiring that she is still competing at a high level on the professional tennis tour, it’s without a doubt, as a tennis fan, heart breaking to see she hasn’t advanced much other than round 1 at grand slam tournament. I wonder, is it time to maybe just play doubles only instead of singles?
Mentally, no doubt, Venus is strong, it’s more demanding physically to stay competitive with much younger generation. I am younger and go to bed at 10pm. It’s too much for a 46 years old went out competing past midnight, in my opinion. That’s the side of competing according to schedule. I love to see Venus Williams on the tour. Her presence is great for the fans to have a chance to meet. However, perhaps, she should retire from singles and open this spot for others to have their chance to compete, learn and experience the big tournament‘s atmosphere and pressure in order to grow and improve their games.
